Heading into the 2018 NFL season, Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson has a looming contract situation entering the fourth year of his rookie deal.
Johnson has continued to voice his desire to work out a new long-term extension with the franchise but hasn't pressed the issue in any manner over the last few months. During an interview on the “Doug and Wolf” show on 98.7 in Arizona, general manager Steve Keim stated that the team is having an active dialogue with the 26-year-old concerning working out a new contract, according to Darren Urban of Azcardinals.com.
Keim also touched on the David Johnson contract situation, something Johnson talked about this week as well. Keim said the Cardinals remain hopeful a deal gets done and that the team and Johnson's camp have had “constant dialogue.” Keim added he sees no dropoff in Johnson's play from his 2016 level. “There's no doubt in my mind David is poised to have a great year,” he said.
The Cardinals are quite confident that Johnson can return to playing at a Pro Bowl level this upcoming season after missing nearly all of the 2017 campaign due to a wrist injury that needed surgery. He hasn't experienced any setbacks along the way during the offseason or training camp that has created any cause for concern from the franchise.
Johnson appears to be ready to go to put together a major bounce-back season that could compare to the level of production in 2016 where he set franchise records for yards from scrimmage (2,118) and touchdowns (20) while earning a Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro nod. He has already voiced that he has the goal of recording more than 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards, which has provided more motivation to perform at a high level on the field.
It may simply be a matter of time before the Cardinals work out a new lucrative extension that keeps Johnson with the franchise for the next several years.
