Prior to the season, the All-Pro cornerback was handed a six-game suspension from the NFL after he violated the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Now, Peterson returns to a defense that is desperate to get their No. 1 cornerback back on the field.
While Peterson was out, Tramaine Brock and rookie Byron Murphy were promoted to starting roles. This is because Robert Alford, who the team signed in the offseason, has been on injured reserve due to a fractured tibia.
There's no doubt that the defense will be much better with Peterson manning one side of the field. Through the first six weeks of the season, Arizona has the 30th ranked pass defense in the NFL.
Even at 29-years-old, Peterson is still one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the NFL. In his first game back, he'll get the chance to play a rookie signal-caller in Daniel Jones. Peterson could have his busiest game of the season as he plays in his first game since the 2018 season.
Also, upon Peterson's return, the trade rumors involving the veteran corner have begun to ramp up. Despite the murmurs, general manager Steve Keim has remained adamant that Peterson isn't going anywhere.
However, for the right price, the Cardinals should be willing to part ways with their Pro-Bowl cornerback. Just ask the Jacksonville Jaguars as they just traded Jalen Ramsey for a large return after stating they wouldn't move him.
