Every NFL Draft, the focus is based on the first round. That's where the stars are and that's where teams make the biggest splashes. However, the second round is nearly as important. Teams that maintain their drafting success in the second round are often the same teams that manage prolonged periods of success.
Getting value later in the draft is key in the league, and several squads pulled that off in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
5 biggest steals from the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft
5. Drake Jackson – 61st overall pick
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers continued their track record of finding value beyond the first round. Jackson was a fantastic acquisition, as he fell all the way to the 61st overall pick. He's an athletic pass-rusher who showed a variety of moves during his time at USC. Jackson is at his best getting to the quarterback, something that every team in the NFL covets. He's only 21 years old, which means he has plenty of potential to grow into a good player.
There was some talk of Jackson sneaking his way into the bottom of the first round. It wouldn't have been all that surprising, as he's a high-upside prospect at a premium position. A similar situation occurred in 2021 when defensive end Payton Turner was taken by the New Orleans Saints in the latter part of the first round. It was hugely surprising to see Jackson fall all the way to the bottom of the second round, and the fact that the 49ers didn't even have to trade up makes this an even better selection.
4. George Pickens – 52nd overall pick
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pickens will have one of the biggest immediate impacts of any second-round pick. His size and strength as wide receiver will easily translate well into the NFL, and his solid route running and hands will make him an instant problem for defensive backs. The Steelers will immediately insert him into the starting lineup next to Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson, creating one of the better wide receiver rooms in the NFL.
Pickens is one of the few second-round selections who will step in and make quality miniutes for his team. Finding a guy like him in the middle of the second round is good work from the Steelers' front office.
3. Cameron Jurgens – 51st overall pick
Philadelphia Eagles
Article Continues BelowThe Eagles had one of the best drafts in the entire NFL, and Jurgens was a big part of that. The center from Nebraska is a well-rounded prospect who should excel in the Eagles' zone running attack. Fellow center Jason Kelce is the perfect comparison for Jurgens, and now he'll get to learn under Kelce himself for a year before being asked to step into a starting role.
While Jurgens likely won't start this season, the value the Eagles got for this pick is insane. Acquiring a future multi-year starter along the offensive line in the second round is always a huge steal, and Jurgens is no exception.
2. Skyy Moore – 54th overall pick
Kansas City Chiefs
Aside fro m Pickens, Moore is another second-round wide receiver who should produce the most as a rookie. He is a speedy pass-catcher who excels with the ball in his hands. In other words, he's a perfect fit for the Chiefs. It helps that there are tons of targets to absorb after the Tyreek Hill trade. Moore will be a day one starter for the Chiefs, and he will be an effective one.
The team got tons of value while addressing a position of need with Moore. Many thought that the Western Michigan product would be selected at the bottom of the first round. Instead, he fell all the way to pick no. 54. What makes this even more of a steal is that this pick was acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots. The Chiefs managed to trade down, acquire more capital, and still land a starting-caliber receiver.
1. David Ojabo – 45th overall pick
Baltimore Ravens
Ojabo is a huge part of the best draft class in the NFL. The Ravens took a chance on the former Michigan Wolverines standout who suffered an Achilles tear during his Pro Day earlier this spring. If he didn't get hurt, he would have been selected inside the top 20 picks.
As an edge rusher, he plays with terrific speed and he has a variety of pass-rushing moves that are among the best in this class. The Ravens will be getting a monster when Ojabo returns from his Achilles injury, making this a well-spent second round selection.
