The Baltimore Ravens aren’t expected to have a quarterback competition during training camp. Veteran Joe Flacco remains the likely starter heading into the season. But there might just be a big QB battle in the not-too-distant future if rookie Lamar Jackson continues at his current rate.
According to Ravens offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, Jackson has been progressing much more quickly than expected during rookie training camp.
“He's done an outstanding job up to date,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said, via Garrett Downing of the Ravens' official website. “He's way ahead of the curve. This guy is a hard, hard worker, a tough-minded guy.”
Mornhinweg was particularly impressed with Jackson’s improvement as a pocket passer, although he admits he’s still far from perfect and has some ways to go.
The Ravens are certainly expecting Jackson to make it a legit competition with Flacco for that starting QB job sooner rather than later. That’s why they used a first-round pick in this year’s draft to go get him. Of course, Flacco isn’t going to give up his spot without a fight and is planning to end the questions about Jackson on the field with winning.
But Jackson will have the opportunity to make his own on-field case soon enough. The Ravens kick off the preseason with the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 2, where Jackson’s expected to see a heavy workload. If he can show even more advanced progress than what he's shown during training camp, Flacco's job may very well be under a lot more threat.
