Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Michael Pierce has signed his restricted free agent tender.

The Ravens posted the update on their official Twitter account on May 1.

BaltimoreRavens.com staff writer Clifton Brown goes into more detail regarding Pierce's contract situation.

Ravens defensive tackle Michael Pierce has signed his restricted free agent tender to return next season.

The Ravens placed a second-round tender on Pierce following the 2018 season. Had another team offered Pierce a contract, the Ravens would have been given the right to match.

Had the Ravens decided not to match an offer to Pierce, they would have received a second-round pick in return.

According to Brown, the two sides can still agree to a long-term deal. Should Pierce decide not to sign a contract before the league year begins in March 2020, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

The 26-year-old Pierce enters his fourth NFL season with the Ravens. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall grade of 90.8 – the highest in Baltimore's top-rated defense.

Pierce will earn $3.095 million in the 2019 NFL season – a far cry from his base pay of $650,000 in 2018, per The Baltimore Sun's Jonas Shaffer. He recorded 32 tackles in 14 games for the Ravens last year.

Re-signing Pierce for the 2019 NFL season makes sense for both sides. For the Ravens, having Pierce back for at least one more year fortifies their vaunted defense.

On the other hand, Pierce gets a chance to become a Pro Bowler in 2019. Not only that, but he should help Baltimore return to postseason prominence.
