The Buffalo Bills had to climb up in the NFL Draft to select quarterback Josh Allen. But instead of anointing him as their starter right off the bat, the Bills expect the rookie to climb up the team’s depth chart if he wants the job.

According to Bills general manager Brandon Beane (per WGR 500 in Buffalo), Allen will start as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman.

Although, Beane previously said that Allen will definitely get the chance to compete for the starting job and keep it if he wins it. After the Bills spent a substantial amount to acquire Allen, they likely expect him to win the job sooner rather than later, especially given his competition.

While the Bills just acquired McCarron this offseason via free agency, it’s unlikely that they view him as their long-term quarterback. Meanwhile, Peterson was a fifth-round pick last year who disastrously threw five picks in his first – and likely only – career NFL start.

But while Allen has the physical tools to become a starting quarterback, it remains to be seen just how quickly he can get up to speed with the team’s offense. Moreover, he also has to prove that concerns about his accuracy aren’t as significant as many feared during the draft process.

It won’t be that surprising if Allen does come into the season as the No. 3 QB in Buffalo as he gradually goes through the steep learning curve in the NFL. But with everything the Bills have invested in him, he’ll most likely get his chance to start at some point during the season – whether he's truly ready or not.
