The Carolina Panthers are coming off their bye week to take on the Houston Texans in Week 8, and the injury update before this game is a mixed bag for players like safety Jeremy Chinn, pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos, and offensive lineman Austin Corbett.
“The Panthers placed three players on injured reserve, ruling them out for the next four weeks,” the team’s website reported on Tuesday afternoon. “That group includes defensive back Jeremy Chinn (quadriceps), outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring), and tight end Giovanni Ricci (shoulder).”
However, there were some better Panthers injury updates as well after the bye week and ahead of Week 8 vs the Texans.
“Right guard Austin Corbett has been activated from the physically unable to perform list,” the report announced. “He's practiced for the last three weeks, after recovering from last year's torn ACL in the regular season finale.”
To fill the remaining two roster spots after losing Chinn, Gross-Matos, and Ricci and elevating Corbett, the team signed offensive lineman Brett Toth and outside linebacker Luiji Vilain from the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings’ practice squads, respectively.
Austin Corbett's return is key for Bryce Young
Austin Corbett’s return is big for the Panthers and their rookie quarterback Bryce Young as head gets ready to face the signal-caller who came off the board directly behind him in the 2023 NFL Draft, Texans rookie QB and No. 2 overall pick CJ Stroud.
While not a star, Corbett is a solid offensive lineman who’s played on the Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Rams (including during their Super Bowl season), and the Panthers. He’s started 58 of his 72 NFL games, including all 17 games last season for Carolina.
The Panthers' rookie QB has suffered 16 sacks this season behind three different starting right guards, so Corbett will Hopefully help that situation.
