The Chicago Bears were a surprise team in 2018. There were expectations in the city for the future, but the franchise arrived in the playoffs a year or two early. The Bears won the NFC North Division and were able to host a playoff game. The Eagles came into Chicago and took down the Bears in the wild card round, but last season has the Bears looking forward to winning even more.
In free agency, the Bears addressed many of their needs. They were in need of a cornerback and added Buster Skrine from the New York Jets. The Bears knew they needed help in their secondary and signed Haha Clinton-Dix away from the Washington Redskins. They decided to trade Jordan Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles and signed Mike Davis from Seattle. This is not a perfect team, but it is a playoff team once again. There is still some work to be done, though, if the Bears want to turn into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
1. Kicker
The kicking in Chicago was the team's worst area last season. Cody Parkey did not have a strong season; it led to his release from the team. The last straw came in the Bears' playoff game when Parkey hit the upright as time expired. Mitchell Trubisky led the Bears down the field after a long kickoff return. They had a chance to win the game with a kick, but Parkey was not able to convert.
There are many games in which kicking is the difference. Any good team in the NFL has a good kicker. Look at the kickers in this past season's Super Bowl for example. If the Bears want to take that next step, they will need a player they can trust with four seconds on the clock a 40-yard kick about to decide a ballgame.
2. Outside Linebacker
Article Continues BelowThis may be a strange position to focus on for this team. The Bears have the best player at that position with Khalil Mack and have Leonard Floyd on the other side. This is a depth move. The Bears are extremely top-heavy at the position with Mack and Floyd, but there is not much behind them.
This is a move that can be made in the middle rounds of the upcoming draft. The Bears did not add another linebacker in free agency due to the fact that they are strong at the top of the depth chart. Heading into the draft, they could use some of their later picks to get stronger at a position that has been historically good for the Bears.
3. Cornerback
Despite signing Skrine, there are some concerns at the cornerback position. Bryce Callahan left for Denver in free agency. He was a strong corner for Chicago in the slot last season. The team added Skrine, who can play on the outside and in the slot, but he comes with some baggage. Skrine will be 30 years old when the season begins. Since entering the league in 2011, Skrine has been flagged for more penalties than any other player in the league.
The Bears can use some more depth in their secondary. Whether it is at safety or corner, Chicago could bring in some more defensive players. Look for the organization to take some young talent on draft night.
