The Chicago Bears are known for being a defensive club, and that reputation remained true this past year, as the Bears finished ranked third in the NFL in defense on their way to 12 wins.
But it should be noted that Chicago is improving offensively, and the Bears are working hard to fix any bugs in training camp, with quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone saying that “this is the time to push the envelope,” according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com:
“Coach Nagy is a great coach to play quarterback for, specifically in these types of settings in training camp because he allows you to go out there, test some throws, to see what you can get away with,” Ragone said. “We’re constantly pushing that mentality.”
With Mitchell Trubisky entering his third season under center for the Bears, the time is now for the young quarterback to make that jump that everyone has been waiting for, and Trubisky thinks camp has served both he and the rest of the offense well:
“We’ve been in a lot of situations this camp that we haven’t seen in the past couple years or in practices,” Trubisky said. “These situations come up especially with the defense that we’re going against there. … I think that’s where we’re growing and coming together as a team. We’re just seeing a lot of different looks, and we’re adjusting off that. That’s allowed us to grow as an offense, communicate and stay on the same page.”
Basically, Chicago knows that in order to truly take the next step as an offense, Trubisky needs to get better. If and when that happens, the Bears will suddenly become a rather solid offensive team.
Chicago won the NFC North division this past season before getting upset by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. In that game, the Bears scored just 15 points.
