Former St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams running back Benny Cunningham visited with the New Orleans Saints early on Monday, but it didn't take him very long to decide to re-sign with the Chicago Bears. His representatives at SIG Sports tweeted the news earlier today.

In five NFL seasons, Cunningham has served primarily as a reserve who mostly sees the field in third-down situations given his versatility as a runner and receiver out of the back field. He has also made his presence felt on special teams for both the Rams and Bears during his time with the franchises.

Cunningham, now 27, experienced his best season as a second-year back for St. Louis in 2014. That season, he put up a combined 598 receiving and rushing yards while scoring four touchdowns.

As his career has gone on, he's received fewer and fewer carries while being utilized much more as a pass-catcher. During his first season with Chicago in 2017, he only had nine rushing attempts for 29 yards on the season. Conversely, he managed to rack up 240 receiving yards on 20 catches in 14 games played. For his career, he has over 200 more receiving yards (992) than yards on the ground (777).

Had Cunningham signed with New Orleans, he would've struggled to see the field much behind their two-headed monster of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. That deadly combination combined for 1,852 rushing yards and 1,242 through the air while helping the Saints go 11-5 and nearly reach the NFC Championship game.

With Chicago, Cunningham will continue to compete for playing time with Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen.
