New Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy now has his offensive coordinator. The team has hired former Oregon Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich to fill the role previously held by Dowell Loggains, who left for the Miami Dolphins.

Helfrich spent four years as Oregon head coach, with the Ducks going 37-16 during that span. They reached the College Football Playoff national championship game in 2014 under his leadership but was fired in 2016 after a disappointing 4-8 season.

Prior to his stint as Ducks head coach, Helfrich also spent four years as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Chip Kelly. In Helfrich's eight years in Eugene, Oregon consistently had one of the most prolific offenses in all of college football.

Helfrich chose the Chicago job despite reported interest from the University of Arizona to be their head coach, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

While Nagy will be calling his own plays in Chicago, Helfrich will still have an integral role to play in turning around a Bears offense which finished 28th in points this past season and has averaged just 18.3 points per game over the last three seasons.

Chief among those roles will be to help develop incoming second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Helfrich was instrumental in developing current Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota into a Heisman Trophy winner during his time in Oregon.

Nagy and Helfrich will have their work cut out for them in turning things around for a Bears team which has missed the playoffs in 10 of the last 11 years and has finished dead last in the NFC North in each of the last four years.
