The Chicago Bears are known for their defense, as they rode their third-ranked defensive unit to 12 wins and an NFC North division title this past season. However, the offense also seems to be coming along. Bears running back Tarik Cohen says the offense may catch up to the defense one day:
“I feel like our defense is well-known already,” Cohen told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Our offense is just getting into the swing of things. With us all being young, we’re finally maturing, and we’re just getting ready to match our defense.”
As for what Cohen means by “matching” the defense?
“Not get bailed out by them,” he said. “I feel like a couple of those games, they bailed us out. So I want to do the same for them.”
Chicago ranked just 21st in the league in total offense in 2018, but it did make the most of its opportunities, as it was able to average 26.3 points per game, which ranked ninth in the NFL.
Still, there remains a clear gap between the defense and the offense, and Cohen is hoping to close it.
The 23-year-old is coming off of a season in which he rushed for 444 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.5 yards per carry, but Cohen did most of his damage as a receiver, hauling in 71 receptions for 725 yards and five scores. In addition, he led the NFL with 411 punt return yards. All of those numbers resulted in a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection for Cohen.
