The Chicago Bears did not have the highest of expectations going into the 2017 NFL season. Still, their 5-11 finish was hardly what they had in mind for a rebuild moving forward.
As a result, the Bears will be looking to get rid of several undesirable contracts this offseason. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, outside linebacker Pernell McPhee is among those that could be on their way out of Chicago:
McPhee enjoyed a solid start to his career with the Baltimore Ravens after winning Super Bowl 47 in just his second season. Chicago had hoped that he could bring that championship pedigree after signing him to a five-year deal prior to the 2015 NFL season.
Unfortunately, McPhee still has yet to play a full 16-game season in his three years with the Bears. He has recorded 8.0 sacks and 37 tackles after appearing in just 22 games over the last two seasons. That said, it seems they may be looking for a more youthful, stable option on the edge.
McPhee may also be a casualty of the disastrous free agent class the Bears brought in last offseason in an attempt to salvage the 2017 season. Signings like quarterback Mike Glennon along with wide receivers Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright will all likely witness their lucrative stints in Chicago come to an end.
Meanwhile, the Bears still have looming concerns on the defensive side of the ball with cornerback Kyle Fuller expected to depart in free agency. All things considered, it seems the team could very well be in the early stages of a full rebuild.
