Maybe the Chicago Bears don't trust Mitchell Trubisky after all.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Bears are in talks with free-agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and if they sign him, he would likely be the starter over Trubisky.

While exact terms of the potential contract are not yet known, Florio notes that Bridgewater could end up earning around $21 million annually.

That would be a rather hefty price to pay for a backup quarterback or for someone you are just bringing in as competition, so it seems pretty clear that Chicago is viewing Bridgewater as its No. 1 signal-caller.

Bridgewater has spent the past couple of years with the New Orleans Saints and is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he was pressed into starting duty for five games due to Drew Brees' thumb injury.

During that time, Bridgewater was terrific, throwing for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns and a couple of interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.1.

Of course, Bridgewater has only started six games overall since 2016, which makes the rumored number a potentially risky one for the Bears, but Chicago is in desperate need of a quarterback.

Bridgewater, who played his collegiate football at Louisville, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (32nd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He was installed as the Vikings' starting signal-caller for his first couple of seasons and experienced moderate success, but during the summer of 2016, the 27-year-old suffered a devastating knee injury that knocked him out for all of 2016.

Since then, Bridgewater has been relegated to backup duty, but it appears that is about to change.
