The Chicago Bears selected Mitchell Trubisky second overall back in 2017. Playing most of the season that year, Trubisky definitely had his ups-and-downs. He appeared in 12 games, completing 59.4% of his passes for 2,193 yards and seven touchdowns compared to seven interceptions.
While he still had some issues in year two, Trubisky saw major improvements. In 14 games, he improved his completion percentage to 66.6%. He threw for 3,223 yards and jumped his touchdowns all the way up to 24, compared to 12 interceptions.
Those numbers definitely took a huge leap and helped lead the Bears to a 12-4 record. However, he struggled with inconsistency and accuracy at times. Is that his next improvement? Does he take another leap forward in 2019?
What exactly should you expect from Trubisky in Week 1 of the 2019 season against the Green Bay Packers?
The first thing you have to look at is the team around Trubisky. He has great running backs in Tarik Cohen and David Montgomery. The Bears also have a solid tight end in Trey Burton. Most importantly though, the offensive line is solid and the wide receivers are low-key great. Allen Robinson is a freak, Taylor Gabriel has elite speed, and Anthony Miller is poised for a breakout year.
With a solid team around him, there are plenty of reasons to believe Trubsiky could take the next step in 2019.
Then there's his opponent for Week 1. There are two sides to this coin. First, the Green Bay Packers don't exactly have an elite defense. There are questions in the secondary and the front seven isn't elite, so they won't mask their problems all that well.
However, this is also a divisional rival. That ramps things up a little bit. You never know what will happen in a contest against divisional rivals, so you can't exactly count on the obvious.
With that in mind, the Green Bay defense might be up to the challenge of stopping an exciting and promising Chicago offense.
All that being said, we need an answer. And Mitchell Trubisky will give it to us in the form of an overall strong game, but he'll still show some signs of needing to grow.
Article Continues BelowExpect a few big throws from the third-year quarterback. He'll likely find Gabriel or Robinson for a huge play at some point. He could also connect with Cohen on a short screen pass that the running back turns into a big gain.
With that comes some struggles though. A few drives will likely falter with Trubisky firing an inaccurate pass or two that could have resulted in first downs.
At the end of the day though, the numbers will be great. Trubisky is trending upwards and he'll prove that to open up the 2019 season. The Bears and Packers have the first game of the year, playing this Thursday. Trubisky will establish himself early in the game.
Expect around 250 yards and two touchdowns from the University of North Carolina product. He might pepper in an interception, but will limit the mistakes for the most part. In the end, it will be how he plays that determines this game.
If Trubisky plays well, that elite Bears' defense should do their job and limit Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense as much as possible. In doing so, they'd pick up the win.
However, if Trubisky isn't marching the offense down the field and forcing the defense to play too much, they could tire out. If that happens, Rodgers will pounce and the Packers could end up scoring more than expected and coming out of Week 1 with a win.
Now in his third year, it's time for Trubisky to be the leader of the team. If he puts up the numbers you should expect from a veteran quarterback of his caliber in this situation, the Bears will walk away with a win in Week 1.
