Over the offseason, the expectations for the Cleveland Browns skyrocketed. Despite the slow start from the team, Baker Mayfield said the expectations of making the playoffs has remained the same.

“That’s what the guys in this locker room expect,” Mayfield said in an interview that will be televised on NBC’s Football Night in America, the Sunday night pregame show of record. “And I don’t think we can wrap our minds around what it would mean for this town until it actually happens. And so I think that benefit of being a little naive about it, it’s taking it one week at a time. Knowing where we want to go, what our expectations are and what we have to do get there. But then don’t look up until it’s there. And don’t look up ’til you’re done and to see what you’ve created and that culture that we would have at that point and the energy that the fans would have.”

Earlier this year, the Browns were able to acquire Odell Beckham Jr. in a blockbuster trade with the New York Giants. The addition of the dynamic wide receiver caused the media to label the Browns as contenders in the AFC.

However, just two weeks into the season, Mayfield is finding out how hard it is to live up those presumptions. The Browns opened up their season with a 30-point loss to the Tennessee Titans.

On the other hand, their only win is over a decimated New York Jets team on Monday night. Regardless, Cleveland has a team talented enough to clinch a playoff berth this year.

Making the postseason would be the greatest thing to happen to Cleveland since LeBron James brought the city an NBA Championship in 2016. The last time that Cleveland was a playoff candidate, Mayfield was just seven years old.
