The Cleveland Browns will head into the 2018 NFL season with veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor under center. The struggling franchise which is coming off a winless drafted Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall, but plans to take their time bringing him along slowly.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the team's rookie quarterback will get plenty of time to shine during the upcoming NFL preseason. Mayfield is expected to be on the field for quite some time in the preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Coach Hue Jackson said the No. 1 overall pick “will play quite a bit”  in the preseason opener against the Giants.

Although the Browns aren't far removed from going 0-16, Cleveland has put together a talented squad during the offseason. The quarterback position has some security with Taylor at the helm and Mayfield backing him up while the receiving corps got a considerable boost with the addition of Jarvis Landry.

As for when Mayfield may get his opportunity to start, it remains to be seen. Head coach Hue Jackson has been adamant about riding with Taylor for the time being and letting Mayfield develop over the course of his rookie and possibly beyond that.

On Thursday, the Browns will get their preseason underway when they take on the Giants at MetLife Stadium. It'll be one of four games played by Cleveland before heading into the NFL regular season. Mayfield and company will also take on the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, and Detroit Lions before going head-to-head against the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.
