The Cleveland Browns appointed Freddie Kitchens as their new head coach on Wednesday after much deliberation and various interviews with other candidates. There's really no surprise why the team went with Kitchens after how drastically he turned the team's offense around since Week 9.
CLE offense under Freddie Kitchens (all stats since week 9)
+ Led the NFL in yards per play (6.86)
+ Tied for the league lead in yards per pass attempt (8.72)
+ 4th in yards per game (395.1)
+ 4th in passing yards per game (285.9)
23.75 points per game (14th) https://t.co/PQHVvds75L— Matthew Berry (@MatthewBerryTMR) January 9, 2019
Kitchens is a humble and bright offensive minded coach, so it's clear the Browns will be taking advantage of the young, talented offensive unit they already possess. Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield stood firmly behind Kitchens once he began making the play calls and the offense thrived with Kitchens as the team's offensive coordinator. The Browns won five of their last eight games to close out the second half of the season and the future is increasingly bright for Cleveland.
The Browns finished third in the AFC North, which marks the first time they didn't finish in last place in the division since 2010. The offense was high powered in 2018 and the defense was full of young playmakers. Players on both sides of the ball clearly loved being a part of the new found winning culture and the head coaching job was thought to be one of the most sought after vacancies heading into the 2019 season.
Kitchens and Mayfield already have a fantastic relationship, which is incredibly important when looking at teams such as the Patriots, Saints, Rams, and Chiefs. All of these teams possess a strong head coach/quarterback bond that have been able to guide their respective teams to a lot of success.
Hopefully, this hire pays off and Kitchens can get the Browns back into the postseason in the near future.
