Former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy will meet with the Cleveland Browns about their head coach opening on Thursday according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. McCarthy wanted to interview with the Browns last offseason but the team had no interest.
McCarthy is also set to have an interview with the Giants over the weekend so it actually could be McCarthy interviewing the Browns if both teams have interest him in.
According to Cabot if the Browns and McCarthy agree on a deal, the general manager job could go to assistant general manager Eliot Wolf who has been with the Browns since 2018.
McCarthy and Wolf spent 12 years together in Green Bay and it would make sense for the two guys to continue that relationship with the Browns.
During McCarthy's time out of the league, he spent a lot of time studying analytics to get ready for his next job. The Browns' Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta plans to incorporate more of the “Moneyball” concept in the Browns gameplans. With McCarty accepting analytics as a new part of the game it could help him land the job with the Browns.
Former Browns coach Freddie Kitchens and General Manager John Dorsey didn't embrace the analytics side of football and it was a big reason they were not brought back.
If McCarthy does get the job he is going to have a lot of pressure on him early to help Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield take the next step in his development.
