Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale has made headlines recently with his comments about Baker Mayfield. Martindale claims the Cleveland Browns rookie is “this generation’s Brett Favre or John Elway.”
But upon hearing that incredible statement, Browns head coach Hue Jackson wasn’t having any of it:
“Huh? … Tell Don thank you, but I'm not buying that. … Tell him you're not buttering us up that way. That's not gonna work,” Jackson said per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Jackson’s reaction was similar to Browns offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who also didn’t sound particularly convinced.
It speaks to the hyperbole in Martindale’s remark that even Mayfield’s own coaches aren’t quite ready to buy into the notion that the rookie is poised to become the next coming of two of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
Mayfield has played in just two games thus far in his NFL career. And while he’s shown some flashes of the ability that made the Browns select him with the No. 1 overall pick, to think he's clearly on his way to becoming one of the all-time greats seems hard to imagine. He still has so much to prove to even be considered in the same breath as Favre or Elway.
It remains to be seen whether Martindale really is sincere in his belief about Mayfield or if he is just trying to inflate the rookie’s ego ahead of their upcoming matchup. Regardless, Hue Jackson does not want any part of this type of talk surrounding his prized young quarterback.
