There's no denying the fact that Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns is one of the best defensive players in the NFL, but his mental mistakes can be costly. Garrett leads the NFL in sacks and in penalties after Week 2.
The dominant defensive end sits atop the NFL with five sacks through two games, with three sacks coming on Monday night against the New York Jets. Garrett has been simply unstoppable over the past two weeks.
At the same time, the Browns pass rusher has collected four accepted penalties (which is the most in the NFL). Garrett actually has five total flags thrown on him, but one of them was declined to accept a roughing the passer infraction that he committed on the same play.
Altogether, the Browns have committed 27 penalties (most in the NFL). Additionally, Cleveland's penalties have cost the Browns 267 yards, with Garrett accounting for 50.
Article Continues BelowThe third-year edge-defender is coming off his best season with 13.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, 29 quarterback hits, and three forced fumbles. But his struggles of obtaining penalties began last year as well.
The Texas A&M product had 12 total flags thrown on him in 2018 (tied for fourth-most in the NFL). Among them, nine of those penalties were called for offsides.
Under new head coach Freddie Kitchens, the Browns have yet to show any discipline on the field. If Cleveland hopes to turn its season around, the team — and Garrett — must cut down on penalties.
