The Cleveland Browns have decided to shut down their training facility after an unnamed player's COVID-19 test result came back positive.
In an official statement posted on their Twitter account, the Browns announced that all face-to-face team activities will be temporarily placed on hold, as they look to determine the next steps they have to take to address this issue:
“Earlier this morning, the Cleveland Browns were informed that a player’s test results have come back positive for COVID-19,” the team stated in the statement (h/t Michael David Smith). “The individual has immediately self-isolated and the Browns facility is closed this morning while contact tracing is being conducted. The team will continue to hold meetings remotely (part of the NFL-NFLPA intensive protocol) and will consult with the league and medical experts on the appropriate next steps as the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and the entire community remains our highest priority.”
It comes as a bit of a surprise that the Browns have decided to shut down the entire facility after just one positive test. Then again, we're not questioning their decision here, considering how this is obviously geared towards the health and safety of every single person within the organization. In these trying times, one can never be too careful.
The Browns are slated to take on the Houston Texans on Sunday, and at the moment, there has been no announcement pertaining to the cancellation or rescheduling of the matchup. Given the circumstances, however, it would not be surprising if Cleveland is the next team that will be forced to reschedule a game due to the coronavirus.
FRIDAY UPDATE: The Browns have already reopened their facility.
