A lot can change in a matter of weeks, especially for an NFL quarterback. Following the sudden signing of Andy Dalton, the Dallas Cowboys have waived Cooper Rush, making him a free agent.
Less than two months ago, the Cowboys signed Rush to a restricted free agent tender worth $2.1 million. Upon signing the tender, it was assumed that Rush would carry the mantle as Dak Prescott's backup quarterback in 2020.
However, in the 2020 NFL Draft, Dallas selected Ben DiNucci in the seventh round. DiNucci, a quarterback out of James Madison, was likely taken to provide some competition with Rush for the No. 2 quarterback spot. That idea would quickly be thwarted as Dallas would sign Dalton to a one-year deal.
Back in 2017, Rush signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan. While he stuck around with the team for three years, he's only attempted three passes in his career. Seeing that Dalton provides Dallas with more experience, that spelled the end of Rush's time with the Cowboys.
Given the current state of the quarterback position in free agency, it could be tough for Rush to find a new home this offseason. It took Jameis Winston, who was openly willing to accept a backup role, over a month to sign with a new team.
Before Rush gets a chance to scour the open market, he'll need to clear waivers first. In all likeliness, there aren't going to be any teams that place a claim on the former undrafted quarterback. Still, with his association with the Cowboys, Rush could very well get another opportunity to continue his career at some point in 2020.
