Earlier in the season, Jerry Jones stated that a long-term deal for Dak Prescott was “imminent.” Just a few weeks later, Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are now “not close” to getting a contract extension done, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Over the course of the offseason, both Carson Wentz and Jared Goff were given lucrative extensions by their respective teams. Of course, Prescott was drafted in the same season as Wentz and Goff but remains as the only one of the three not to get paid.

There's no doubt that a deal will ultimately get done with both sides interested in extending their relationship beyond 2019. However, a deal won't be finalized any time in the near future.

As a fourth-round pick out of Mississippi State, Prescott has bet on himself his entire football career. That's exactly the mentality he has carried into contract negotiations with the Cowboys organization.

There were reports of Dallas offering their franchise quarterback a deal that would've made him one of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Instead, the Cowboys signal-caller is deciding to put talks on hold in hopes he can increase his value with his play on the field.

After playing in three games this season, Prescott is off to a blazing start with 920 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. Along with those numbers, Prescott has been very efficient, completing a career-high 74.5% of his passes.

Wentz and Goff signed extensions that pay them over $32 million annually before the season started. Due to the Cowboys playing their cards wrong, Prescott could command the most money of the three notable quarterbacks from the 2016 NFL Draft.
