It has been known for quite some time that the Dallas Cowboys and safety Earl Thomas have mutual interest in one another, and the NFL apparently found it fishy.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the league investigated the Cowboys earlier in the fall for possible tampering with Thomas, who was playing for the Seattle Seahawks at the time. However, Dallas, which cooperated fully, was found of no wrongdoing.

Thomas is set to become a free agent this March, and barring unforeseen circumstances, he will likely not be returning to the Seahawks.

The Cowboys are viewed as potential frontrunners for his services.

Thomas played just four games with Seattle this past season before a broken leg injury in Week 4 ended his campaign. During that time, Thomas recorded 22 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defended.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Texas, was originally selected by the Seahawks in the first round (14th pick overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

He immediately started at safety for Seattle during his rookie campaign, finishing with 76 tackles, five picks and seven passes defended.

The following year, Thomas was a Pro Bowler after posting 98 tackles, two picks, a forced fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries. That marked the first of five straight trips to Honolulu for Thomas, who also earned three First-Team All-Pro selections over that span.

Thomas was a part of a dominant Seahawks defense that went to back-to-back Super Bowls during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns, defeating the Denver Broncos to win the championship during the former season.
