With NFL teams waiting to see if the Dallas Cowboys are able to retain Demarcus Lawrence, they might have just received some good news.
According to Calvin Watkins of The Athletic, the Cowboys and Lawrence are not close to finalizing any deal. This comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Cowboys have two guys along their defensive line to get hit with indefinite suspensions.
Randy Gregory and David Irving were both suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy.
Prioritizing Lawrence seems like a no-brainer for Dallas. It's uncertain why the Cowboys are hesitant to commit to Lawrence long-term.
Plenty of teams would love to add a guy like Lawrence to their roster. You don't find many guys like Lawrence anywhere.
The Cowboys would likely place their franchise tag on Lawrence if no deal is reached—as noted by Watkins. It remains to be seen if Lawrence is interested in playing on the tag nonetheless.

That sort of production is not easily replaced in the NFL. In today's NFL, it as important as ever to find guys who can consistently get to the quarterback.
As a result, if the Cowboys are unable to retain Lawrence, he would become one of the hottest commodities in free agency.
Deciding to not re-sign Lawrence would be a questionable decision by the Cowboys organization.
Every team who is interested in adding Lawrence is paying extra attention to his situation in Dallas. Furthermore, those teams should be happy to see that both sides aren't close on a deal yet.
