In the immediate aftermath of Drew Lock's Pro Day, the University of Missouri quarterback had as much momentum as any prospect in the 2019 draft class. Originally considered a second or third-round selection, Lock was suddenly being discussed as a potential top-10 pick and the second quarterback to come off the board behind Oklahoma's Kyler Murray.
It didn't play out that way. Instead of hearing his name called early on Thursday night, Lock didn't hear it called at all, resigned to waiting until the second round before the Denver Broncos ended his surprising fall at No. 42 overall.
On Friday, Lock didn't deflect from the disappointment of being drafted in the second round. But he also seemed ready to use his draft-night slide as fuel to propel his nascent NFL career with Denver.
“It added a whole lot of chips to the shoulder,” Lock said of his fall, per NFL.com's Chase Goodbread. “It's more like a full bottle of Pringles.”
Barring injury, the rookie signal-caller will backup veteran quarterback Joe Flacco for at least one season. The Broncos acquired the former Super Bowl MVP from the Baltimore Ravens in February in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
While Lock may have preferred to both be drafted much sooner and have a realistic chance at starting as a rookie, he certainly seems happy to have been selected by Denver, and the presence of John Elway is one of the biggest reasons why.
“If one of the best quarterbacks of all time wants to you play for his organization, and not only that but for the team he also played for, it's pretty surreal,” he said.
