Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has said that he spoke to Matt Patricia about taking the OC job with the Lions, but it never worked out.
“We talked, but it never got to that point. There was no interview. Matt and I are too close to go through an interview. If it ever would have happened, it would have been, ‘Hey, you want to come?' And I would have said yes or no. It wouldn’t have been anything other than that.”
Charlie Weis and Matt Patricia have a close relationship because they previously worked together. In 2004, they worked together with the New England Patriots. The next season, Weis tried to hire Patricia as a low-level assistant the following year at Notre Dame.
Since then, they've been good friends. When Matt Patricia fired Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator and spent two weeks looking for a replacement, there was some chance that Weis would work together with his old friend.
But Weis, who is currently working at SiriusXM, said that he'd only return to coaching if the situation was right. And, apparently, it wasn't right for him.
“I said in the right situation (I wanted to get back in). Well, the right situation didn’t materialize, that’s why I didn’t. It wasn’t like I didn’t have any opportunities, I did, but not in the right situation.”
In addition to working as the head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis worked as an offensive coordinator in the NFL for the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs.
