Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is keen on second-year receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Rodgers has been engulfed in drama all offseason, and is just looking forward to getting back to playing football. After Mike McCarthy's firing, a lot of dirty laundry was aired to the public, and no one came out looking clean.
But with football activities starting to ramp up now, Rodgers and the team have the opportunity to put all that behind them. The development of the Packers' young receiving corps is one of the most important things for the team right now, and Rodgers said recently after practice he's particularly pleased with one young wideout.
Per, Zach Kruse of the Packers Wire, Rodgers said he's been impressed by Valdes-Scantling.
“I think Marquez has had a fantastic spring and really stepped up as a guy who can be an every down player,” he said.
A rookie last year, Valdes-Scantling showed plenty of flashes. In 16 games and 10 starts, he reeled in 38 receptions for 581 yards and two touchdowns.
A South Florida product, the Packers drafted him in the fifth round last year. Green Bay has a long history of throwing darts at the board with numerous late round receivers and seeing which ones stick. Valdes-Scantling had some huge games when he was given opportunity, and it sounds like he'll be a big part of the offense moving forward.
New coach Matt LaFleur is in charge now, so everyone has a clean slate. Davante Adams is locked in as Rodgers' top option, but after that the depth chart is a bit unsettled. There will be an all-out battle in camp for the next few spots, and it sounds like Valdes-Scantling has a good shot to emerge as the number two.
