Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams left Thursday’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an ankle injury, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
The second-year back limped off in the second quarter after two carries for two yards and one reception for six yards. After the game, Williams wasn't sure if he would've been able to return to the game if it were the regular season, but he didn’t seem concerned that his injury would a long-term issue, per Demovsky.
If it is, though, it would be a significant blow for the Packers, who are already short of running backs heading into the season with Aaron Jones suspended for the first two games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Mike McCarthy indicated back in June that the Packers would be rolling with a running back by committee this season, with Williams, Jones, and former wide receiver Ty Montgomery sharing the carries.

First-year player Joel Bouagnon could also get an opportunity to carve out a bigger role for himself if Williams misses time in preseason. Bouagnon led the Packers with 41 yards on 13 carries against the Steelers.
Williams, a fourth-round pick in 2017, led the team last season with 556 yards with four rushing touchdowns in 153 carries as a rookie. He also added 262 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
