In Packers news not related to Matt LaFleur, word has just come out that the team has granted permission for offensive coordinator Joe Philbin to interview with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings have been without an offensive coordinator since Tony Sparano died last July. The cause of Sparano's death was said to be heart disease.

Philbin will be interviewing with the Vikings to replace Sparano.

Philbin comes to the Vikings' table with extensive experience as an offensive line coach. In addition to serving in that capacity for several years at the college level, he served as an offensive coordinator in Green Bay and Indianapolis.

Additionally, Joe Philbin served as the offensive coordinator in Green Bay for 12 years. He also served as the interim head coach for the team for four games, after they'd fired Mike McCarthy.

Finally, Joe Philbin was the head coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2012 to 2015.

When Sparano died last July, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said that the team went on a “downward spiral.”

“Quite honestly, the death of Tony Sparano really kind of threw things into a little bit of a downward spiral, only because the fact that this guy was type-A personality. He was very innovative in the running game, had a strong voice in that room and had a strong voice with me. Yes, I do feel like we lost a little bit of our identity. We are going to get that back.”

Hopefully, if Joe Philbin takes the job, the “downward spiral” will be reversed.
