Rob Demovsky of ESPN is reporting that Patriots' offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is “very much a possibility” in the Green Bay Packers' head coach search. The Packers interviewed McDaniels as well as Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur and former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase over the weekend. They'll be deciding who to bring in for the next round of interviews this week.
The Packers fired coach Mike McCarthy after a Week 12 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, following 13 years at the helm. McCarthy won the 2011 Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers, but 2018 was the second consecutive season that Green Bay has missed the playoffs.
McDaniels has been the offensive coordinator for the Patriots since 2012. On Feb. 6, 2018, McDaniels was announced as the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, taking over for the fired Chuck Pagano. However, McDaniels withdrew from the position on the same day and announced that he had decided to stay with the Patriots. It's rumored that McDaniels had concerns about the health of Andrew Luck's shoulder, the Colts hired Frank Reich, who was the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Packers felt that McCarthy didn't get enough out of Rodgers over the last few seasons, so finding a coach who can put their 35-year-old star quarterback in the right position is their top priority. Injuries have hampered Rodgers over the last few seasons, so who better for the Packers to hire than the man who designed an offense that kept Tom Brady healthy and productive into his forties.
