The Houston Texans had a very disappointing 2020 season. They went 4-12 and played horribly in their first season after trading away wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
Hopkins was a big part of the offense and trading him away was a big reason why the Texans struggled.
The Texans also have controversy around star quarterback Deshaun Watson and his future is no uncertain in the NFL. This makes it even harder for Houston to rebuild the roster and get back to contention.
They finally got rid of head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien, who made many poor decisions during his tenure. The Texans had a decent off-season but nothing to drastically change the roster. They signed many veteran players that could have a little left in the tank. While these moves were decent they still have a long way to go.
The draft was also tough to add talent as they didn't have a first or second round pick. With so much uncertainty regarding Watson's future the Texans drafted quarterback Davis Mills with the first pick they had. Mills could be a solid player but he is no Watson. It will be interesting to see what transpires and how Houston will go about the current controversy surrounding Watson.
The rest of the draft picks were solid but nothing that will transform the team. With so much uncertainty on the roster it creates opportunity for an undrafted free agent to make the roster.
Texans offensive lineman Carson Green
The Texans may have found a hidden gem with this undrafted rookie. Offensive lineman Carson Green has a ton of potential and could make a solid lineman in the NFL. He was projected to be a 6th or 7th round pick but fell and didn't get drafted. Instead he will get a great opportunity with the Texans and could make an impact on the roster.
Article Continues BelowOne ability Green has is being able to play guard or tackle. While he may have played tackle his whole college career he projects to transition to guard easily. He also has the ability to block on different types of pressures from pass rushers which is a skill not every lineman has right away. Green has quick hands which allows him to make quick blocks on rushers and adjust to any move they counter with.
Although Green has a good skill set he has some things to work on. Green doesn't have a ton of strength for an offensive lineman which weakens his ability to play tackle in the NFL. He could however transition over to guard and gain strength so he can improve as a blocker.
One thing Green has shown is the ability to improve each season as he did so in college. He may need to gain some speed but he has the tools and capability to be a starting guard for the Texans.
Look for Green to make the roster and become a piece of the offensive line in the future.
The Texans are still in a tough spot but found a good player in Green. It may take some time but the Texans are heading in the right direction. The Texans are slowing gaining players in the rebuilding process but success won't come right away.
While the Texans may not improve this year they are slowly headed in the right direction.
