The NFL announced on Tuesday that it will give 32 compensatory picks to 15 NFL franchises for the 2020 draft. The Houston Texans were one.
The league gives between one and four compensatory picks to any team, such as the Texans, that loses more compensatory (unrestricted) free agents than they gained in the previous offseason. It's also worth noting that since 2017, compensatory picks are able to be traded.
All compensatory picks are at the ends of rounds three through seven. The placement of picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's average annual salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor.
As far as this year's picks, the Houston Texans received the highest compensatory draft pick — pick No. 97 at the end of the third round. Houston also received two seventh-round picks in picks No. 248 and No. 250.
Last offseason, the Texans lost defensive backs Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson and Kayveon Webster as well as D-lineman Christian Covington.
After losing a whole list of free agents last offseason, the New England Patriots were the only team to secure four compensatory picks — two third-rounders and two sixth-round picks. The Texans didn't get that many.
