Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt has spent the last few months recovering from a broken leg that he suffered this past season.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Watt has once again voiced optimism about the progress he has made up to this point in his rehab.

“I feel very good,” he said. “It’s a day-to-day process. I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made. I’m really, really excited about next season.”

The expectation at this point is for Watt to be ready well ahead of the start of the 2018 campaign. He suffered the injury back in early October, and as he recovers he's increased his workload to what he can physically handle. He will likely use the upcoming offseason to further prepare his body for the rigors that come with playing in the NFL.

Injuries have disrupted Watt's last two seasons, as he was limited to just three games in the 2016 campaign due to a pair of back surgeries to repair a herniated disc. In total, he has played in just eight out of the last 32 regular season games after not missing a single contest in his first five years in the league.

Although Watt is only 28 years old, the significant injuries that he's suffered over the last two campaigns could begin to draw real concern from the Texans if he is either unable to return to elite form, or if he struggles to stay on the field next season.

Prior to the injuries, Watt established himself as arguably the best defensive player in the league behind four consecutive Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro selections, and three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. He is the first defensive player to have multiple seasons with at least 20 sacks, and he holds the Texans franchise record with 76.0 sacks.
