The Houston Texans selected wide receiver John Metchie III in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Metchie unfortunately was unable to suit up as a rookie after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, but he intends to play for the Texans in 2023.
What do the Texans expect from him in his first season in uniform?
“I’m not setting any expectations on Metch. I certainly will not put any ceilings on him (either),” Texans wide receivers coach Ben McDaniels said. “He’s proved to everybody that that’s unnecessary, and he’ll attempt to shatter those ceilings”
Metchie has been with the team during voluntary workouts but unable to participate recently due to a hamstring strain. The Texans expect him to hit the ground running once he's healthy and see his eagerness to get on the field.

Metchie likely would have been a first-round pick had he not suffered a torn ACL in his final college game with Alabama. He was a star with the Crimson Tide, catching 96 passes for 1,142 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2021.
The Texans can certainly use Metchie after finishing 2022 with the second-worst total offense and scoring offense in the league. Metchie's potential could have played a role in Houston trading away veteran Brandin Cooks, which might slot the former into a starting role alongside Nico Collins and/or Robert Woods.
John Metchie III is a talented football player who will get his chance to shine this season with a revamped Texans offense. If he stays healthy, he could be a breakout candidate among the league's promising young wide receivers.
