It didn't take long for Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson to win the starting quarterback job over Gardner Minshew, and now he's earning another honor.

Ahead of his first NFL game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, Anthony Richardson was named a team captain. On Thursday, Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced the Colts seven team captains, which included Richardson, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Richardson is the only Colts rookie to be named a team captain for the 2023 season. The other six captains are center Ryan Kelly, guard Quentin Nelson, cornerback Kenny Moore II, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, and linebackers Zaire Franklin and Shaquille Leonard. Though Richardson is the only rookie captain for the Colts, Ryan Kelly is also a first-year captain like Richardson. Kelly and Richardson replace running back Jonathan Taylor and Matt Ryan who were both captains last year.

Though it's not common for rookies to be named captains, the Colts have one of the youngest rosters in the league with zero players above the age of thirty. Still, the seven players are voted on by their teammates so it's a testament to how the No. 4 overall pick has been able to garner the respect of his teammates to already be voted a captain.

The Colts have seven team captains, though the NFL has a loose rule that teams can have a maximum six captains. While teams cannot send more than six captains for the pre-game coin toss, there are many teams beside the Colts who also have more than six team captains, so it's not unusual across the league.
