Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Devin Funchess suffered a broken collarbone in the team's Week 1 24-30 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The injury will sideline for an extended period.

Funchess finished the game with three receptions for 31 yards.

Funchess signed a one-year $10 million contract with the Colts after spending his previous four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. At 25 with production in the past (career 161 receptions for 2,233 yards and 21 touchdowns), Funchess likely could've earned himself a long-term deal if he did well in 2019.

Signing on a one-year deal on a competitive team like the Colts offered Funchess the opportunity to play well in a feature role alongside T.Y. Hilton in hopes of breaking big in 2020 free agency. Now the wide receiver is in jeopardy of entering next year's free agency coming off of a significant injury.

Without Funchess, the Colts will likely elevate one of their young receivers waiting in the wings. Second-year Clemson product Deon Cain comes to mind as a replacement to Funchess as a more physical “X” receiver. Against Los Angeles on Sunday, he caught two passes for 35 yards. Cain is also coming off of a standout training camp after tearing an ACL during 2018 preseason.

Rookie Parris Campbell should see increased snaps in the wake of Funchess' injury. Though his skill set (of speed, speed, and more speed) is redundant with Hilton's, the Colts coaching staff has raved about the former Ohio State Buckeye after selecting him in the second round of the NFL Draft.
