Indianapolis Colts safety Mike Mitchell suffered a calf injury during the Colts' Wild Card Round matchup with the Houston Texans on Saturday and was ruled out for the remainder of the game, according to the team.

Mitchell had logged a pair of tackles before exiting.

Mitchell signed with the Colts in October and played in eight games during the regular season, making four starts. Over that time, he registered 28 tackles, an interception and a pair of forced fumbles.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Ohio, was originally selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round (47th pick overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Raiders, playing in 16 games in three out of those four seasons. However, he was never able to become a full-time starter, starting no more than four contests in any one of his seasons with Oakland.

Mitchell then moved on to the Carolina Panthers in 2013 and started at free safety, recording 72 tackles, four sacks, four interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles and eight passes defended in an impressive campaign.

As a result, the Pittsburgh Steelers proceeded to sign Mitchell to a five-year contract in March 2014.

He spent four years as the Steelers' starting free safety, never replicating his production with the Panthers, but still representing a solid, consistent force in Pittsburgh's secondary.

Mitchell was cut by the Steelers last March.

The Colts went 10-6 during the regular season, winning nine of their last 10 games to get into the playoffs.
