The Jacksonville Jaguars will have to continue to wait to see their first-round pick in Josh Allen in action. Allen suffered a knee contusion early on during the Jaguars offseason programs.
Doug Marrone said it is “unlikely” that the edge rusher will be practicing during next week's mandatory minicamp. Although, Marrone would go on to say that Allen could probably go next week but they'll hold him out until training camp.
The Jaguars want to play it careful with their new defensive weapon. Somehow, the Jaguars were able to land Allen with the seventh overall pick after the New York Giants notoriously took Daniel Jones.
Allen adds another dimension to a Jaguars defense that is already one of the best in the NFL. Although, the loss of Telvin Smith stings a bit after he has announced he will sit out the entire 2019 season.
Allen dominated in the three seasons he started at outside linebacker in college. At Kentucky, Allen totaled 31 sacks, 42 tackles for loss, and 11 forced fumbles in his last three seasons.
You add that level of production to guys like Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue and you may have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL. First things first though, Allen needs to get healthy enough to get some reps in practice.
Marrone and the Jaguars are erring on the side of caution with their first-round pick this offseason. But don't fret Jacksonville fans, it seems like Allen will be ready to showcase his abilities when the Jaguars begin their training camp soon.
