The Jacksonville Jaguars own one o the most vicious defenses in the NFL today and they just made a significant move that partly secures that their stop unit will just be as unforgiving in the coming seasons. Initial building block to the aforementioned solid defensive, Telvin Smith, will not be going anywhere anytime soon.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jaguars have signed linebacker Telvin Smith to a four-year extension worth $50 million.

Prior to this reported deal, Smith’s original four-year contract he signed in 2014 with Jacksonville was due to expire next year. Instead of dealing with what would happen if he hit free agency, the Jaguars secured the 26-year-old Florida State alum.

Smith is a big reason why the Jaguars are having a blast on defense. He leads the team in tackles (58) and is second with a pair of interceptions. The Jaguars are using Smith to the hilt this season, as he paces the team with 475 defensive snaps and has even appeared on 35 snaps for the special teams, per Pro-Football Reference.

Smith was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Jaguars in 2014 and proceeded to record at least 104 tackles in each of the next three seasons.

Known for his speed and ability to cover the field from end-to-end, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the linebacker's career progresses after he loses some of that athleticism. The good news for Jacksonville is that a wildly underrated part of Smith's game is his ability to see plays before the ball is even snapped.

He is good.
