Nope. Nikky won't be getting his political career started.

Former New York Jets great center Nick Mangold has toyed with the idea to run for Congress, but has now put an end to it by making a statement through his official Twitter account.

I am not running for Congress. While it would be an amazing opportunity and honor to serve the people of New Jersey’s District 11, I am not at a place where I could commit to that. I like to investigate every opportunity that comes to me and this one will not go any further. However I do appreciate the support that was given in my short period of possibly thinking about running for Congress.”

As evidenced by his words, the man is legitimately serious about the possibility.

It all started when Essex County Republican Chairman Al Barlas got in the mix. He was after Mangold, recruiting him for a run at a seat in the House of Representatives from the 11th District in New Jersey. Barlas made the claim that Mangold was thinking about the offer, via Matt Friedman of Politico New Jersey.

“I had a conversation with him. He’s intrigued by the idea. He has to think it over and talk with his wife,” Barlas said to Politico. “After an 11-year playing career and a college career, he’s enjoying being at home with his wife and kids.”

Mangold was drafted in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft by Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini of the New York Jets. He and D'Brickashaw Ferguson completely overhauled Gang Green's offensive line and served as anchors for a decade. Most notably, they led the way during Rex Ryan's ground-and-pound era (two AFC Championship Game appearances).

After the Jets cut him last summer, he's yet to sign on with another team but doesn't completely rule out the possibility of playing again.
