Jack Del Rio needs to work on his phrasing.

After his Raiders fell to the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 26-10, Del Rio attempted to compliment the dynamic play of Alex Smith. However, in the process, he completely ripped Smith's ability to throw the pigskin.

From Vic Tafur of the SF Gate:

If he’s got to rely on throwing the ball, it’s really not his strong suit, but if you allow them to run the ball, do some of their gimmicky things, then he comes to life,” Del Rio said. “That’s what they were able to do today.”

Smith has been criticized throughout his career for not throwing the ball down the field. Not just efficiently, but whatsoever.

Still, Smith outplayed Oakland's Derek Carr on Sunday, completing 19 of 22 passes for 224 yards. And, to question a quarterback's ability to pass is to question their ability as a quarterback, overall.

Smith will get another chance to change Del Rio's discourse when the Chiefs host the Raiders on December 8th, possibly with major playoff implications on the line. Oakland currently sits atop the AFC West in a tie with the Denver Broncos at 4-2. The Chiefs aren't far behind, sporting a 3-2 record.
