The Las Vegas Raiders used their 12th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft on former Alabama star Henry Ruggs III.
The Raiders were planning to draft a receiver with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, they couldn't decide between Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb, or Henry Ruggs III.
In a recent interview, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said he thinks all three wideouts would do well in the team’s offense, but he chose Ruggs because of his speed and explosion.
“All three wide receivers we felt were diverse and would bring different things to the Raiders and I feel like Coach Gruden and that offensive staff is so good they could have gotten the most out of all three of them,” Mayock said, via the team’s website. “However, the distinguishing fact or really was his speed, his explosion and his work ethic.”
“When you're in the division we're in and you look at Kansas City and you look at what they have on offense and what their explosion looks like, we needed to get faster and we think that his addition opens up our entire offense.
Ruggs does have tremendous speed, in this year’s Scouting Combine, he ran the fastest 40-yard dash. This past season at Alabama, Ruggs recorded 40 catches for 746 yards and had only one drop.
Nevertheless, the Raiders will need all the help they can get from Ruggs for this upcoming season. This past season, the Raiders had the third-fewest receptions and fourth-fewest receiving yards by wideouts.
