It's been a wild offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders so far and we still have the 2022 NFL Draft around the corner. The AFC West is loaded, but this franchise will have a fighting chance after Derek Carr signed an extension with the team. Now, the veteran quarterback reveals why he agreed to the long-term deal with Las Vegas.
According to Ari Meirov, Carr claims “he structured his contract in a way that will help the team add more players and keep their own guys.” So, Derek Carr secured the bag while simultaneously giving the Raiders cap space to make signings elsewhere. However, it sounds like the star quarterback blames himself for the organization trading away Khalil Mack.
#Raiders QB Derek Carr says he structured his contract in a way that will help the team add more players and keep their own guys.
"I went through heartbreak last time I signed my contract. My best friend (Khalil Mack) left. I didn't want that to ever happen again."

Who knows if that's the real reason the Raiders dealt Mack away to the Chicago Bears, but Carr seems to believe that's the case. Luckily for this franchise, they received a gem in Maxx Crosby who just signed a big deal himself. Las Vegas is in great shape to be a contender in the next few years, especially now that Derek Carr is signed to a long-term deal.
We'll see how the remainder of the offseason plays out. The Raiders have a handful of talented players in line to receive a big payday in 2023. One of them is Josh Jacobs who has been an incredibly consistent running back for this franchise. If Las Vegas can maintain the core of their roster for the next few seasons, we should see this franchise in the thick of the playoff race for years to come.
