Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will continue to enjoy being protected by an offensive line that features seasoned veteran, Donald Penn. This is after the offensive tackle reportedly agreed to restructure his contract with Oakland for the team to guarantee itself of Penn’s services this coming 2018 NFL season, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Penn has been one of the most durable players in the league over the past decade. Although he played in only 14 games in the 2017 campaign after suffering a foot injury, it was the only time so far in his NFL career that he failed to play 16 games in a season. Before that, Penn has appeared in 174 consecutive games, stretching from 2007 to 2017.

The Raiders used their 15th pick in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft to take former UCLA Bruins tackle Kolton Miller off the board with a vision of having him compete for a starting job. But Penn’s return to Oakland’s fold could also mean that Miller may have to wait a little longer before taking over as the starter. In any case, having a three-time Pro Bowler tackle around should help expedite the learning curve of Miller in the pros.

Back in the 2016 season, the 25-year-old Penn allowed just a sack in 621 pass attempts, though, it remains to be seen whether he could get back to that form after going under the knife to fix his foot injury.

Oakland had one of the best quarterback protection units a season ago when the team allowed just 24 sacks, tied for third fewest in the league.
