Oakland Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley missed virtually his entire rookie season due to injury. And after sitting out the last few days of training camp, he’s set to miss at least a couple more weeks with another physical ailment.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:

On Raiders 2017 first-round CB Gareon Conley, who has missed the last few days: He is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a hip strain, sources tell Jim Trotter and me. When he’s on the field, though, he’s impressed.

Conley, the No. 24 overall pick last year, was a highly-rated cornerback prospect, ranked just behind college teammate and eventual Defensive Rookie of the Year Marshon Lattimore. However, he missed all but two games last season due to a recurring shin injury.

Expectations have now been set high for him heading into his second year. Raiders coach Jon Gruden has been spoken in glowing terms about Conley's potential this offseason, saying he will build the secondary around the young corner.

The Raiders have completely overhauled their cornerback depth chart this offseason. They shipped out the likes of David Amerson and Sean Smith and brought in Leon Hall, Rashaan Melvin, Shareece Wright, and Daryl Worley.

But even with those new additions, Conley is expected to be the centerpiece of the team’s defensive backfield. Hopefully for the Raiders, Conley’s hip injury is just a slight bump in the road and not a recurring issue like his shin last season so that he’ll be ready to go for the start of the regular season.
