The Oakland Raiders have decided to turn to scouting director Shaun Herock as the interim general manager after the firing of Reggie McKenzie.
Oakland chose to part ways with McKenzie on Monday after seven seasons, which came just a day after CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that a move was expected to be made after the season.
That means that Gruden nows take over an even more prominent role when it comes to major decisions facing the future of the franchise, and one of those decisions has involved a bigger role for one of his top scouts.
From NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport:
With GM Reggie McKenzie out today, the
#Raiders have tapped college scouting director Shaun Herock — who was Jon Gruden’s most trusted scout among those he inherited — as their de facto interim GM. He’s also expected to get an interview for the vacant top personnel job.
There are a ton of unknowns when it comes to when the Raiders will be able to turn things around, but it's clear that Gruden is on a mission to completely revamp the entire organization.
And with the on-field play being far from great this season, there's no doubt that significant upgrades are needed in a lot of different areas. So, if Herock can thrive in his upgraded role, he could get a shot at landing the position permanently.
The Raiders will look to build on their Week 14 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers when they head to Cincinnati on Sunday for a matchup against the Bengals.
