After signing a historic 10-year deal with the Oakland Raiders and being introduced as the new head coach of the storied NFL franchise, Jon Gruden's next task is to fill out his coaching staff.

Recently, Gruden approached Rich Gannon, his former quarterback in Oakland, about the team's vacancy at quarterback coach. Gannon passed on the opportunity to rejoin Gruden in silver and black, but another former Raiders quarterback is interested in the job. Jeff Garcia, who is another former player that played for Gruden, admits he's reached out to the new head coach about the job on 95.7 The Game, transcribed by Levi Damien of Silver And Black Pride.

“I’ve reached out to Jon, I’ve expressed that I’m interested in being an assistant of some sort. That I would love to be involved in the game. Greg Olson is a good friend of mine. We’ve crossed paths, we’ve been together multiple times throughout my NFL career in different places and I have a great friendship/relationship with him off the field.”

With Gannon passes on the opportunity and Garcia very familiar with Gruden from his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 47-year-old and Bay Area native would be an intriguing option for the Raiders as a quarterback coach.

Garcia wants to break into coaching as he still very much loves the game and wants to be near it. His last gig in the NFL was with the then-St. Louis Rams back in 2015 as an assistant, via Damien.

“I would love to have the opportunity,” Garcia said. “I would love to get my foot in the door and be able to be back in the Bay Area and work with the Raiders. But that’s something that’s not really in my control. That’s their decision.”

It'll be interesting to see if Garcia gets consideration to fill the position that Gruden was hoping Gannon would fill for the foreseeable future. Garcia's hungry and eagerness might set him apart if Gruden is truly looking to do all he can to get the best out of Derek Carr.
