Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr remained at the forefront of the team as they escaped with a 16-6 victory against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8. His rushing game was on display as it was key for the Silver and Black to notch their fourth win of the season, and garnered praises from head coach Jon Gruden.
The Fresno State product was encouraged to use his legs more often when head coach Jon Gruden first came over in 2018. On Sunday, Carr ran 41 yards on six carries for the Raiders against a capable Browns defense which earned praise from the Raiders' head tactician, per Luke Straub of USA Today.
“That is what we have all been asking for,” Gruden said to reporters after the win. “We have all been saying, ‘Hey, extend a couple plays. Why don’t you extend a couple plays?’ Today, he extended a couple plays. Those were, I think, the plays that were the secret sauce in the win today.”

Jon Gruden has a certain affinity with mobile quarterbacks as he saw success in his first stint as Raiders coach together with former MVP quarterback Rich Gannon. He also signed a dual-threat playmaker in Marcus Mariota to a lucrative contract back in the offseason and will aim to shape Carr in the same mold for the coming years.
Disruptive winds and chilly weather during the contest prompted Derek Carr to make less use of their aerial attack where he only tallied 112 yards on a 15/24 completion. Most of the snaps went to sophomore running back Josh Jacobs who produced 128 rushing yards on 31 carries. Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow also caught four passes on 26 yards and contributed a touchdown as well.
Carr, who once said he models his game after New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, will aim to make use of his rushing game once again as they face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9.
